What Software Is Used?

This course is taught using Ableton Live Intro, as that is the most accessible and economical version of Live available to the most users. However if you have Standard, Suite or Lite, you are still in great hands and will get a ton out of this course! Many of the features are similar and all of the topics on theory, sound design, arranging etc., are widely applicable, regardless of DAW or version of Live.

What version of Live do I need?

This course is taught using Live 10, but if you have an earlier version of Live, that works great too!

Do I need a computer? Mac or Pc?

Ableton Live is compatible on both Mac and PC, so either option is great!

What will I need to take this course?

All you need is a computer, a copy of Ableton Live and headphones or speakers. If you wish to do recordings, you will also probably want some type of Audio Interface. There are no additional purchases necessary as we tried to keep the requirements to a minimum so the course is open to as many folks as possible.

Will we use any 3rd party plugins or additional paid software in this course?

We will use some 3rd party plugins however they are all FREE 😊 Again, the goal for this course was to keep the price barrier to entry as low as possible. No paid plugins, no expensive extras. As we are using Live Intro, we found that there are some great free plugins that can help us get a lot of extra mileage, particularly in the synth department. The details on the plugins used and where you can download/install them are revealed once you enroll.

How long is the course?

As of now, there are about 50 videos, totaling over 7+ hours. It might even be over 8 hours by the time we launch! (Not all videos are uploaded and fully reflected in the course preview above).

When does the course launch?

How long will I have access?

You will have access as long as the course is available! There is no expiration date so you will be able to refer back to the videos whenever you like.

Do you drip feed the content? (Time delay when new lessons are available)

Nope! We find that super annoying, so you are encouraged to go at your own pace! You will have access to all the content immediately, with nothing held back.

Is Liam Shy an Ableton Certified Trainer? What does that mean?

Yes! Liam Shy is a 100% official Ableton Certified Trainer, through Ableton directly. It is an extremely rigorous process that ensures he is competent to teach and posses a deep knowledge of Ableton's hardware & software, as well as music production in general. Is there anything you don't cover in this course?

This course will cover the foundations of how to use Ableton Live, as well as an overview of every single plugin included in Live Intro. The plugins specific to Standard and Suite are reserved for future classes. While we do go through how to compose from start to finish, we have specifically left out the process of mixing and mastering, which will be revealed at a later date as a separate course due to the large amount of additional time needed to cover these topics properly.

I'm a complete beginner - is this course for me?

Yes! This course is designed for folks who are starting at square one. This is the perfect course for you!

I'm an advanced user, will I get anything out of taking this course?

There is still a ton that you can glean from this course, but some sections you might be able to skip. If you are interested in diving deeper into the specifics of how each plugin truly works, sound design techniques (including with some pretty unique 3rd party instruments), or music theory/composition training, then you will still get a lot out of this class. However if you are looking for a very advanced course, then sign up for the e-mail list to be notified when more advanced courses are revealed at a later date.
